Lot of people have asked me as to why we are only focusing
on college students when we could get several orders from people out of
college. They get hungry too, they could
order too?
There are several reasons why we decided to be a college
centric website even though we knew there is market for us elsewhere. To begin
with and the most important one is the ‘coolness’ factor associated with
choosing your college and having restaurants categorized to it instead of
searching for the area. We also bring a social aspect to this by allowing
people to see what their friends ordered and how they found the food. What is
cheap for the world can be expensive to a college kid and what is awesome to a
college kid might be obnoxious to the world! Thus there was a need for
restaurants to be reviewed by this demographics for this demographic.
There are several localized players in providing online food
delivery in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore but the biggest problem I see with
catering to the needs of all is marketing. Since our target customers are
concentrated in hostels or at a particular time of the day at the campus our
marketing becomes easy. We do not need television ads or other such techniques.
A simple attractive flyer works for us, facebook ads are extremely affective
since our customers spends 4-5 hours on such websites.
We however do have a more generic website called www.IndiaKhana.com but College Khana is
our priority. Most restaurants have student’s discounts which is also an easy
and attractive way to lure students. Plus our innovative points and referral system
will allow one to get cash discounts or merchandises which will be available
soon.
What is important to realize is that over 13 million
students joined college last year and 1.3 million students relocated in order
to attend college. This in itself is a huge untapped market. Our future goals
are also college centric and this website www.collegekhana.com is just the stepping stone to meeting
them.
